Status : Need help from good scripters (and from others after)

Ok guys, as you know, I'm pretty painful/distressing in my kind ! But I really need some help !

So, to stop polluting everything with my Quadro too many questions I am going to centralize everything on that node. It will be easier for everyone. ~~I would try to maintain it by deleting it regularly (it would be a shame to block the server again ;-)~~

I therefore call all Sauer's experts such as Chaos, SRBS, Razgriz, Suicizer and all the others to help me in my project.

As you may have noticed, I'm not very good at English, so forgive me if I use the wrong vocabulary of GoogleTrad ;-)

* THE PROJECT :

- The origins :
This is an old project I had stopped and I took recently. At the time, I downloaded all the contents of Quadropolis (several gigabytes) and all other projects based on CubeEngine2...
I recently set out to create a gutter, then, of course, as there was not proper texture for the roof, I've created some, and then I found a free pack of textures that I have undertaken to integrate, then I have creating other textures which missed... I temporarily stop the developement of this package because it quickly became clear to me that he had to implement new features to the Sauer's GUI for integrate all these new content.

- The definition :
This project has several stages :
A) The first goal is to improve CubeEngine without changing a single line of code so as not to create yet another fork.
The first step must take the form of a non-invasive package for Sauer and consists of two things :

(of quality)

(except maps !)

(as long as they are free to use !)

(of all that can be translated without modifying the source code)

(as in all modern games)

B) In a second step, the goal might be to create an ultimate fork by modifying the source code but in the context of a real engine simple and versatile, and not simply just as a game. (but we are not there yet !!!)

The project is placed in the Public Domain (or lisense CC0).

So a lot of work to do to refresh our favorite game ;-)

'writecfg' takes an argument (the name of the file to write). So if you have multiple users, you can issue the command writecfg user_1, for example. Upon startup, a user can select their profile and exec the file containing all their settings. If they change a setting, you can simply use writecfg user_1 again to save their settings once more.

Yep, I looked at the file "engine/command.cpp" yesterday and found some very interesting things... But I do not know how to use some, for example, the commands "cases" !??
For "writecfg" I'm so stupid, I knew it long ago but I have the memory of a goldfish...
Moreover, it can be used without argument : in this case, it saves the settings in the "config.cfg".

In any case, now, the best solution seems to be clear.

case/casef/cases are a switch-like command for ints/floats/strings respectively.

The proper structure: case <value> [<test value 1> <body for test 1>...] [<default body>] e.g. case $test 1 [ echo found 1! ] 5 [ echo found 5! ] [ echo nothing found! ] output for: test=1: "found 1!" test=5: "found 5!" test=3: "nothing found"

Notes:
[] means arguments are optional.
... means the grouped arguments can be repeated ad infinitum (although there is a 24 argument limit in Sauerbraten)
value - the type is dependent on which command is used (case/f/s)

Ok guy, I deleted all my nods of the forum and I got the most important in the text file attached (it's a draft).

Now, I still have some questions :

* About Textures :
- How work the secondary texture (not the decalworld, juste the u/c 0/1 diffus text) ???
- If someone understand what Sauer do when a normalmap is missing, he's welcome !!!

* About Scripting :
- I want to understand what do "$var = xxx" and how exactly word the arguments ($arg1 = xxx) and why "$arg1" is not "arg1" : what is hardcoded ???
- I found that SDL can manage joystick. Is exist special keycode (not defined by default in the file "keymap.cfg") that can be used for that ? Or, do you know a free (GNU/...) software for manage joysticks ?

* About the project :
Do you think it would be nice to put all the sentences of menus in a single file for easy translation? I had thought of a system of double list (one for indexes, one for content), with commands for dynamically add and remove text. All text is therefore in a simple list var. Thus, we would one file for the menu and several language files to initialize the text. Those who have experience in GUI: do you think it is usable with all GUI commands? I also know how to set up a global default color for text ?

Haven't owned a joystick in years... but most usb joystick/gamepads (under GNU/Linux) you should just be able to run:
/sbin/modprobe joydev

...and plug-in your gamepad, most of the time it will autoload any other needed modules and just work (run `xev`, and press buttons to check for input).

Then map the keys i guess (options > keys, in sauerbraten), select the control and press your gamepad button (and then the defaults aswell, so you can switch to your keyboard without changing them all everytime). You could also try dumping the keycode values with `xev | grep keycode` and manually edit keymap.cfg

I haven't tried this with sauer before... but if you get a gamepad working with it i'd love to know (might end up buying one for lols).

About the questions of textures:
When a secondary texture has been specified with "u" or "1" just before it's path, it won't be rendered on default right over the diffuse texture. If this would be the case (which can happen), then the secondary texture is being rendered over the diffuse texture, so not mixed into each other (which is as the docs are saying just the purpose of specifying it as "u" or "1"). If you still want they get blend into each other, you should use textureblending afterwards, which can be done on other ways either, for example:

texture z lunaran/green1_h.jpg

In that case, you have more options for setting shaders, while you still have the effect of texture blending.
I'm not 100% sure about this technique as I always have been used "vlayer" instead. Just try it on your own.

There is another way textures will be blended into each other, which can be defined by using the shaders "pulseworld" or "pulseglowworld".
On both ways, if the surface (which contains the texture that has been set with that particular shader) of the geometry is inside alpha-material, commands like "texalpha" will have a different effect as other shaders would have (like "vanishing" the secondary texture, so only the diffuse texture would be sighted for a moment).

About scripting,
Isn't "$var" a string or something similar to that?
Why would you make it yourself even harder as it already is? We both know your not an experienced scripter yet, don't make it even tougher man.

It is not because I ask many questions that I am a bad scripter, quite the contrary. There is almost no documentation and the way of doing is slightly different from those I know (hence, often unexpected results)

And I do not want specifically do it alone, on the contrary, any help of quality would be welcome. But I don't speak English very well and translation take me a lot of time. And working together is always long and difficult. That's why I prefer to put myself the basics of the system, then in a second time, ask those who are interested to help me to add and improve things. Startup is a bit long, but when the best system (for easy loading dynamically all that can be) will be found, the rest will only be a repetitive work to do (translations, integration of additional content, ... ).

But back to my problem: I still don't understand. Documentation and your explanations are still not very clear for me ! Assume that our (u1) texture is a PNG with a white circle at 50% alpha. Ok, so if I only use the two textures (stdshader) and I want it mixes them, I do how ? Then if I use a shader, (u1) texture how this will react according to each type of shader ??? (I do not understand what the documentation says !!!)

About textures,
Just try what I've explained. I assume you know how to use the "textureblend" option within Sauerbraten, so I won't explain that part.
It's also a matter of just experimenting, like I do when I'm making the texture-prefab. Take for example the interesting result which the shader "bumpenvspecmapworld" gives, as the diffuse texture will look more rusty if you would use it for the lunaran textureset. That's just because the environmental-mapped shader will "react" with the specular-mapped texture, as Cube Engine 2 seems to use that texture to define how intense the shader should be rendered on each pixel of the diffuse texture. There isn't anything documented about that, just because the persons who did investigated this previously, were keeping such information for themselves, had the idea that it's too complicated to explain to new beings after all, couldn't explain it as they weren't knowing the whole part or just didn't bother.

About scripting,
Ever read the thread "How not to start a mod" on Cube Wiki? If not, you should.
You can't expect people are that gentle to help you. There are only a few of such people around and you'll be lucky there are a some in this community (which there are but I won't specify any name as those people already know they are great anyways).
That's why starting a huge script-mod isn't a smart idea if you only have a little knowledge about scripting. Start with something like a zoomscript, counter, timer, name-changer, etc first before you starting some real job.
You actually should be damn happy getting so much help of experienced people in scripting, like Razgriz, srbs and Chaos. I already asked such favour several times either and never get such detailed answers back, so get down on your bold knees and kiss their toes :P.

I kind of did this at first, but realized pretty fast that I didn't know what I was doing, so I started writing a bunch of small helpful functions and ended up with a mostly large library that I hope to release soon-ish.
And now that I have this and a whole bunch of scripts, I think I'm ready to get back to the original project. (roughly 2 years has gone by)

I would not say that my project is a mod, but more than an addon because the permanent goal is it must not be invasive. So initially, it is to provide a large amount of new content of quality, but by integrating them in a modern way. For example, I want to change the definition of textures directly in-game, for, by example, they add a grass tex (and many other useful things like that). As I have a very large collection of new contents, I must offer them in a form suitable and not like that in bulk.

@SRBS :
Je suis également entrain de créer des librairies génériques (regarde les fichiers joint à ce noeud). I decided to make two groups: useful libs and a "bonus" collection of libs that are not vital for UCE. Maybe we can share our works !

@About Deleted Nodes :
Overall, you have absolutely right and I hesitated a long time before to do something so drastic. However, you noticed that before any erasing, I have grouped in a file all the important informations (see the attached file "knowledge.txt"). I decided to bring everything together here because I have too many "sophisticated" and various questions to ask to the experts here. And I have great difficult to follow the progress of 20 nodes at a time ! My web browser has finally imploded under the amount of all open tabs ;-) I also believe that the basic noob does not care to know how use the command "listfind" or how do successful a texture blending of footprints !!! And this node is also there to motivate the energy to lead to improvements in the documentation (because everyone knows something useful on some issues but not on others ...).

I'm aware of the fact your not some kind of newcomer which is whining all over the place. But also be aware that everyone around has it's own specialities, like yours seems to be making models (at least, you made some really nice work at that and I respect that) and mines seems to be things related to mapping.
The post was not intended to be offensive, so please don't turn it that way. It just looks like your asking for help which provide only a few people (including me as long as it's not about things like scripting); just the answer, not some "hint".

I know you've added several parts of comments into a .txt-file, but that isn't the way it should be done. Why not? As you can't trace it back when searching it with Google, unless you know the file exists. So just please don't.

That is : anything that is not a content (who keep their licenses even though mine adds are always in the public domain). That is, all scripts belonging (vital for) the project UCE (not the "bonus" additions that are having their own license), including menus, ... ; that is : all the structure.

4) Some people would like to review comments as they contain useful information. Deleting a node will also delete those comments and are inaccessible because of that.

This is actually one of the reasons why I modified the subject of the (failed) ingame mapmodelgui content into the model-prefab content (and the texture-prefab content into a map-prefab soon). Why such decision? So there won't be a content for a model-, a texture-, a material-, a skybox-, a fog-, a cloud-, a textureblending-, a waypoint- and a calclight/remip/pvs-prefab (and anything else you would get in your mind), which wouldn't be logical at all and could be considered as spam, since it won't be easy to find what your actually searching for after all (as textureblending and setting up textures are tight-related to each other, for example) and looks very clutterish.

listfind essentially finds the index of the first element in a list for which a certain condition is true. So, for example, listfind i "3 2 4 8" [= $i 4] would return 2, because the element "4" has an index of 2 in the given list (remember, the first element has an index 0).

(>s A B) will return 1 if string A is greater than string B based on the ASCII order, and 0 otherwise. <s works similarly.

To test whether a variable is an integer, you should test whether every character (remember, in cubescript everything is essentially a string, so you can use 'string' methods on ints) of the variable is an integer; or, equivalently, if every character is an element of the list "0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9".

As I understand it, the only real difference besides the order and number of arguments is that "listfind" uses "looplist", where as "indexof" doesn't.

Well then, how do you suggest I make "local" variables that won't clutter the script? Using the "args" like this has never caused a problem for me-- and I've only learned the little I know about cubescript from broken pages of function definitions, and my own trial and error. Tell me then, how did you YOU learn cubescript?

It will certainly cause problems for scripts that expect arguments to be blank but instead receive the values from your pseudo args and fail to function properly.

I learned cubescript from asking a lot of questions, the occasional piece of help. The rest of the road consisted of making stuff work as it should as plainly as possible without messing up everything else in the process or breaking halfway execution. :P

Here is some example code to see why using args as temporary values can screw stuff up.
Note: This only happens in some cases, it will not cause issues everywhere.

Copy and paste into a file and execute it so that everything is run:

Yeah, but I would say it's a bit too complicated.

All variable's names are what you say they are:
Ex: var = "string"
In this case, the variable name is 'var' and the value assigned to it is 'string' (no quotes on either).

If you echo 'var',
echo var //output: var echo $var //output: string
Notice how you need the $ to get the value of the variable (called dereferencing).

This is why you can do ($var = xxx).

Remember that ($var = xxx) is translated/interpreted as (alias $var xxx).
And in this case, as you should know already is that this is executed as (alias string xxx).
However, the parser dereferences first, so before it becomes the line above, it's (string = xxx)

"$($arg1)"
I've never used this.. so at the moment, I have no idea. :)

I confirm that RaZgRiz says : when you assign values directly to the arguments, it creates a lot of unexpected problems.
Precisely, I wanted to know what you think of my personal technique ???
It consists of systematically test the presence of arguments (with $numargs), then, if it is necessary to modify them, at assign them to a temporary variable (which is always global), and finally, just before the release of the script, to remove these temporary variables by assigning no value.
It's a bit tedious to do ... I have seen a command ("clearvar" I think) but I think it just to assign a value "0" to the variables.
So my question is : how do it properly and else, how "deleted" properly a var ???
More generally, how to create properly a general uninstall function ???

And it's SVN only due to the fact that it simply doesn't work in Justice, you had verified that one yourself. Seems to be part of the issue chaos was having with arguments being wrong and the such, i don't know.

Of course whatever a loop is looping will have a temporary value. Kind of reminds me of push/pop.
And arguments are also temporary variables, so there you go, that's pretty much all i know.

As fir your library, all talk and no work, we haven't seen a single piece yet, not even a screenshot of some function at work, it's killing me. =P

Before this Monday, they were only temporary if that argument was supplied.
However, as of r3849 the issues I have previously shown will no longer arise as all args (1-24) are "nulled" on each function call. and all args (1-24) variables can now be considered temporary.

'listfind' basically lets you specify the criteria for equivalency for a given element in the list. So, you can look for a string in a list with a specific length, etc.

'fontoffset' has something to do with how fonts are read & imported for use. I do not know it's function since I do nothing with the fonts.

'tabify' lines text by adding spaces up like it would in a word processor. This is rarely used (in my experience) but can be used as a way to column-ize the gui if one didn't know how 'guilist' worked.

Try experimenting with it:
//syntax: (tabify <text> <number of tabs>) echo (concatword (tabify "hello" 2) "|||") echo (concatword (tabify "bye" 2) "|||")
Execute both commands to see how the "|||"s are lined up.

ABOUT the (files system) BROWSER_LIB :

As you know, the "loopfiles" command is really powerfull. We could easily implement a mode "shell" and/or create a GUI (useful in many cases as demonstrated by Chaos!).
But for the project, I need them for an another case :
Take the example of a texture. When you want to add new ones, you must copy them into a folder, ok, but after, for integrate them into the game, you must to declare your package somewhere (at the end of file "default_map_settings.cfg" or "autoexec . cfg "for example).
To "simplify" things, I opted for a launching in cascading. That allowing to the user easily disconnect a group with a simple "//" at the beginning of a single line according to the hierarchy of the folder.
But the ideal would still to not have to declare its texture !
So, for do that, it should be able to execute all "texture.cfg" files contained in all sub-folders of the main folder. So just copy/paste the package in the main textures folder for that this package be automatically loaded at the game starting !
So I'll have to use a recursive function with a naming "convention"/"standrad" (like, all textures file must be named "texture.cfg" for that work).

However, general convention is to use letters, numbers, and underscores only, without starting with a number.

For checking my scripts, don't look now, they are obsolete : I work hard on news... I almost finished my library on the paths (the old "browse_lib") and now, I start the main library which will manage the "double-lists" (to reduce the number of variables...).
But I still have a lot of questions ... For example, I continue to systematically remove all the temporary variables at the exit of functions so as not to pollute the config file, or, to return null values.

So the lib "dblist" is the heart of the project. It is through it that everything else will be done. So I need testers, reviewers, ... to make it as "perfect" as possible ! Note that it is not intended to be used by end users but only by the scripts of the project. If you find a way to store "script text" in these dblists, it would be really great !!! :D

The lib "uninstall" is also important for the non-invasiveness of the project. The lib "strings" is to be reviewed "fully" but it works ! It is necessary for others libs. I added two new features : "loopstr" and "echoo"

I worked on the lib "browser" but I still have a problem and I need you to help me. And since I know you like the challenge, I'll launch one :
Make, the most efficient as possible, the filtering function of files. In input, a list of files with their full path and a string containing the filter. On output, the file list (with their path) corresponding to the filter criteria. The filter can have this chars : "*" (all tanks), "?" (1 char), "!" (1 letter), "#" (number one). Use my work in "strings_lib" (ex. "charisletter" "charisnumber" ...) as well as those already contained in "browser_lib".
If you get there you will gain a big hug and a slap on the buttocks ;-)

Otherwise, feel free to let me know your feelings about these scripts, to test them up to make them implode, to help me to optimize them, ..., ..., ... There are, undoubtedly, many things to improve ! Some functions are very heavy and would need to use lighter algorithms, ...

You are right, for now, it's still a bit messy... And, it's true, I tend to do, or too many, or not many tests when I script, because I do not master all. So, let me enlighten you on some things :

"DBLISTS" if for "Double Lists" or "Database Lists". There are two systems : the first allows you to manage all these dblist ; the second is used to manage each dblist.

The first stores the names of existing dblist a "list variable" named.
~__dblists_list => ["dblist_name1" "dblist_name2" "dblist_name3" "dblist_name.."]
All commands of the first system start by : dblists_*
*_numbers : Returns the number of existing dblists
*_newlist : Creat a new dblist (and add them into the main list "~__dblists_list")
*_delete ...
*_rename
*_copy

All commands beginning with "_dblists_*" (correctsname ; varname ; getlist) are used to "simplify" the code.

The second system is the heart of the project and manages dblists. The idea is simple : combine several variables (and their values) in a list (in a double list in this case). This is in order, firstly, not to pollute the config files with too many new variables, and on the other hand, can create new vars on the fly. It'll must therefore store (in lists) each pairs "variable name" / "value of the variable". If I used two lists instead of one (which would have been formatted as ["varname1" "value1" "varname2" "value2" "...]) it in order to have names identical to the values (eg. "fonts" "fonts" "icons" "icons" ...). Note that the values can be lists separated by spaces, but not by quotes !
So for every dblist, we have 2 variables :
_dblist_XXXXX_items : "var name 1" "var name 2" "...
_dblist_XXXXX_data : "value 1" "value2.1 value2.2 ..." "...
("XXXXX" is the name of the dblist stored in the 1st système (~__dblists_list) !)
So of course, my problem is to can store also script code but I can't because of "" and \n ...

All commands beginning with "dblst*" to manage the contents of dblist :
*len : the number of "vars/items" containing in the given dblist
*get / *set : Sets or returns a value of an item
*ren : Rename the "varname" (the item, not the value of it like "*set"!)
*clr : Reset values given in a list
*del : Delete pairs (item and data) given in a list (by items)
*add : Add a new pair item & data

So if you understand, the first system manages the creation and destruction of the two variables constituting a "dblist".

getpathsortedfiles : Provides the ranked list of files in the given path (used getpathcontents and getpathorderlist). This feature allows you to sort files in ascending order (AZ or ZA), to group the files by their extension, which can also be classified by Az and Za.
eg : a.x b.x a.z b.z ; a.x a.z b.x b.z ; b.z a.z b.x a.x ; b.z b.x a.z a.x

getpathfilter : The funciton to make now !

- Documenting my functions at the top of each file ".cfg" (as I do now, but more comprehensive, with examples, ...) for an overview of the file.
- Documenting just before each function (not having to go at the top)
- Giving systematically :
* Input arguments with hooks when optional ( myfunc [] )
* What function returns to normal case and in case of error
* An example of using ingame ( /echo (myfunc arg1 arg2) <= Returns That: "..." )

And at the end of the project, I also write the HTML documentation (here based on the existing model ~ but I think review a bit the CSS because there is a small problem with H0).

Ok, so I looked closely the code of Chaos (function library) and I realized that all was not global !!! That's why he uses a single "return var" in all its functions. I did the test, and, indeed, the variables with the same name, but used in different functions, appear to be local !!!!!

Well, I have scripted a lot these days, I made many mistakes and I'm a little scattered. So I decided (one more time) to stop everything and restart all over again, but this time, starting with the design of a "perfect" "extended library". So I am trying to synthesize all that exists to fill all the holes (ie, anything that does not exist but would be quite useful on a daily basis).

Ok, I have check quickly the SVN changelog and... I am still in shock !
Therefore, the functions "do" and "loopconcat" have disappeared (ok, it will be no great loss). But "listindex" is still there.
Others functions still do not seem be present like "swapvalues"...

But the biggest shock is in the new fonts system management !!! I do not understand why there is a ttf file and what does the word "grey" in the early of the paths !???

This is my secret to no-variable usage functions. Also this is SVN only, and there is a way to accomplish the same thing on Justice and before:

_listindex = [ //<list> <data> push index -1 push count 0 looplist i $arg1 [ if (=s $i $arg2) [ index = $count ] count = (+ $count 1) ] result $index (pop index) (pop count)//ad infinitum, nest inside the pops for >25 pops: (pop a (pop b)) ]

As far as I know, it is just memory limited, so a lot.
Do note: this is one of the reasons I liked push&pop because there were no nested stuff, and the body wouldn't have to be parsed 10 times for 10 temp variables.

1: This is why I say that you can use the same variable name, although you need to be careful because if your function calls another function that someone didn't use this push/pop trick in and they used that varialbe, all sorts of wrong can happen.
2: This is also a solution to the uninstall scripts, although I guess it could be useful to erase the actual functions.

I guess you mean the "MyGames" Folder in "Appdata" again? It's an hidden folder in the "User" directory (Could be named as your account. "Appdata" should be next to folders like "Desktop", "Downloads", etc) which can be sight-able by changing it's properties.

Hum... I always use Reverso GoogleTrad, so, this must come from tiredness. You must understand that communicate in this way take me really a lot (too) of time. This requires a lot of effort of having to deal with : an incomplete knowledge of the English language, a translator which can be a little crazy, the complex rules of the French language, the way of thinking in my Latin language versus that of English, this you said and that I maybe not understood well, what I mean, and, of course, the mysterious CubeScript language ! Variable sections 1 & 2 are as follows: [1]VAR[2]

[1] (types)
F - Variable is a float.
H - Variable is a hexadecimal.
S - Variable is a string.
<none> - Variable is an integer.
I - Is similar to ICOMMAND in that it allows the addition of a function to run specific code when the variable is changed.

[2] (modifiers)
P - Persist: whether or not the variable is stored in the config.cfg or not.
R - Override: I'm not entirely sure how this one works.
N - Rename: This does a rename-like idea. Where the first arg is the cubescript-visible variable, and the 2nd arg is the c++ variable.
F - Same idea as the I above, but different implementation and I 'm not sure on this one either.

Variables are read only ONLY when the max value is less than the min value.

Command sections: [1]COMMAND[2]

[1] (types)
C - This is used twice, but I have no idea what it does.
<none> - Calls the function of the same name with the arguments that match the supplied types.
I - Calls the function defined in the last arg with the arguments that match the supplied type & prototype. (Similar to IVAR above)

[2] (modifiers)
N - Calls the "renamed" function with the arguments that match the supplied types. (Similar to VARN above)
S - No ideas here either. All it seems to do is use a different function name prefix.

Each character is 1 argument. This was taken from myself for some basic Red Eclipse documentation. Someday I'll get to Sauerbraten's.

If you are under Windows W2K/XP, Vista or 7, download THAT (else, go HERE). It's "Code::Blocks" THE Open Source (GPLv3) cross-platform IDE (Integrated Development Environment). Install it ;)

After, go to the folder "Sauer\src\vcpp" and open the file "sauerbraten.cbp" (with CodeBlocks !)

Go to the menu "Build > Build" (or CTRL+F9).

If that doesn't work : go to the menu "Settings > Compiler and Debugger" on the horizontal tab "Toolchain executables" and the button "auto-detect". After, re CTRL+F9
You also can increment the build speed, in the tab "Other Settings", the "Number of processes for parallel builds" (4 for a QuadCore is efficient !).

The new sauerbraten.exe go directly in its default folder, so, just launch it as the normal way and enjoy !

Well, me, on my side, I've worked on some things on SVN, I re-read all the posts of this topic, and I have a lot of things to say...

The first is the fundamental difference between "looplist" and "listfind". In fact, "looplist" simply executes its body (arg3) and returns nothing ; while "listfind" returns the current value of arg1 (the current item in the list) IF the value of its body is TRUE. It's a big difference !!!

Then the second thing is that I don't understand what you said about the new way of the arguments management. For example, Razgriz, talks of the arg0 and I do not understand because for me, it doesn't exist !!! It is also said that now the arguments are "null" by default at the entry of the functions !??? Well, there are two things that I want to know and I do not understand.
1) The first is : Can we now use the arguments as temporary variables and if so, how to do this ?
2) How works the arguments !??? I don't understand if it's "public vars", "internal vars", or simple alias !?

3) Then the behavior of the command "result" has changed, and I do not understand why she does not behave as in other languages (ie forced the function to returns the given value, no matter what is after). Before I could clear my temporary variables after the "result" by putting it in brackets, now this is impossible, why !?!?

The 'arg0' part was a piece of the # command i had shown you at some point, and is irrelevant to actual arguments. It's nothing but an actual variable whose name seemed fitting for a "bank".

2) arguments are arguments. They are hardcoded "variables" that only contain a value when you assign one to them when you run a command. /command arg1 arg2 arg3

'result' has not changed. The game has though, and like emulators, it does not use an interpreter anymore. It uses a code compiler. That means it creates working code out of cubescript and runs it. The order and functionality of many things works as it should now, which means that code inside () brackets executes FIRST as it should. This is why your 'result' returns the wrong value. There's nothing wrong with cubescript, your way of scripting is.

I do not know the details of why push and pop were merged, you better ask eihrul or srbs.
Also, i don't think there's a limit on how many nests you can create. Hell, why should there be one?
I find your way of naming variables absurd as well, you're making your own life hard. :P

The script in that node shows you an example of using an argument in place of a variable. That's pretty much what you wanted to know isn't it?

'result' will result whatever you want it to. If you want it to result something from a previous nest, do something like 'result @variable'. that will also allow you to "nullify" your variable as you like doing so without changing another bit from your example line. But do read on.

As for the limits.. i don't know. It's probably a big number and your chances at reaching it in any way normal are really slim anyway, so don't worry all that much. I also thought arguments were limited to 9, but that doesn't mean i ever even reached that amount.

As for the naming.. no, you do not need to use stuff like ~__somerandomvariablename to avoid conflicts. You can also use a simple prefix like _fbp, whatever you like. As long as your scripts clear the variables they're gonna use before they use them, they will never have a problem. At least i haven't ever had a problem so far, but i guess that's just being cautious.

_four (awesome example for 4 characters :P)

Weren't you paying attention when we said NEVER alias shit to arguments? You'll be fucking them up like that. You can create aliases named as arguments, but they won't work properly when your function has to call an actual argument.

YOU CANNOT UNINSTALL VARIABLES, ONLY NULLIFY THEM

Result does not work the in the same way as return does in most languages.

In Sauerbraten, EVERY command returns a value, whether it be an actual value or an empty string: everything returns a value. (if one is not returned, an empty string is default)
(echo hi) return ""
(+ 3 4) returns 7
etc.
func = [ echo hi ] The function returns "".
func = [ + 3 4 ] The function returns 7.
etc.

Notice that the second example function returns the value of the last command in the function. This is by design in that every command sets the current return value. That is all that result does: sets the current return value. It does not in any way stop code execution.

You can do things like:
func = [ looplist i "this is a test" [ result $i ] ] echo (func)
On each iteration of the loop, the current return value is "this", "is", "a", and "test" respectively, but the actual return value is "". This is because the last executed command is actually the looplist, which returns nothing.

If you want to return at a specific point, you cannot. However you can structure the code so that you can return a specific value after the loops finish. Or use some fun if-block structuring to get around this.

It is possible, but it will use a lot more processing/variables/functions than you probably would want to use. I would suggest that you use push/pop or push [] because it just isn't feasible to setup localvar and all of it's dependencies.

I propose a package which, to be installed, requests to the user to declares it, itself, in its file "autoexec.bat". He is free to remove it after. But, in any case I cant crush its files ! Do not worry about that !

Sauerbraten maintains one homedir and many packagedirs.
To set the homedir, use the startup argument -q. Like this: bin/sauerbraten.exe -qpath/to/homedir
To add a packagedir, use the startup argument -k. Like this: bin/sauerbraten.exe -kpath/to/packagedir

When you loopfiles, Sauerbraten looks in every one of these directories, including the current directory. (ex: C:\Program Files\Sauerbraten)

If you were wondering the syntax for loopfiles, here it is:
loopfiles <varname> <path> <extension> <body>
loopfiles f "scripts" "cfg" [ echo $f ]

But how about of putting a little pressure on Eirhul to get these two functions :

* The "returns " function that would force the return of the given value to the previous node (the function) to avoid this kind of structure :

He's trying to show the functionality of a traditional language's return statement which quits the rest of the function and returns a value.

Result does not act the same as return. A return does not exist in cubescript. It may be possible to implement it, but you'll have to get through eihrul first.

Result just sets the result value of the function and continues on about execution, but remember what I said earlier: "EVERY command returns a value."
So if there is another command after a result, the result's argument is no longer the result value.
The only way is to use variables and if statements to get something similar possible. Or just use a var named retval or something.

"exit 1node" is the same thing as break in most other languages. But it'll end up being a command and it'll kill the result value also.
