The script isn't even provided within the node. I often don't really test scripts as they often mess up your config so bad. Imagen you would have tested all scripts within Quadropolis; your autoexec would be chaos.

Did you know? You can easy try zipped stuff without installing anything. Just go in-game and type /addzip [Filename] and - if the .zip is packaged right - it's content will be loaded temporarily. I do this all the time for testing maps, scripts, etc. You're welcome.

Did you know we have a preview input for scripts so users don't have to get your shit from Quadropolis and only have to read your science?
It's not that hard and doesn't take a lot of time to copy-paste it into the preview window.

According to Ac's comment on his own node; it's not necessary anymore to reload the map. Perhaps this proves you did make this all on your own (well, at least you haven't tried his script)...

Sorry, but you just don't know what you are talking about. I described to rabe how AC's typewriter works. Between the lines you may figure out that I needed to try AC's script to know how it works. I'm unsure if you tried both, AC's and my script, b/c a) AC's script provides no code preview (you want to see before you test something) b) lemme describe how AC's script works again: You go to his typewriter map and run a command, then the script will copy chars that are hidden at another part of his map to your front. You copy the result, leave the map and paste it to your map. My script loads geometry files and imports them into sauer. No hidden fontset needed, no mapchange needed, handy and fast as fuck. AC's idea is pretty nice, just saying, but his script has - technically - nothing to do with mine, except that it writes characters as result.

If you would have read his node, I do have tried out his script, thank you.
Seems like you forgot his script has been created back in the days when there were no .obr-files at all (the brush-saving feature is only from the latest edition while he made it in early Justice edition nearly 3 and a half years ago).
Now stop it and just provide a preview before we put it back as requirement for making a node again.

Have I said anything bad about AC's script? I love AC's ideas; also his C++ skills/ideas are pretty cool. You started talking about that script instead of simply talking about MY node after you downloaded it so you know what you are talking about. If you try my script, sauer will save this function to your config file. You know now how the code looks like and can search & delete it after testing, if you think this code/idea/node is stupid and vote a zero/don't vote and write why it's shit/write nothing. You don't need two editface since they run in either case. Also i commented the delcube out because if what restcoser says it's true, then it has no real reason to delete a space? Not sure, oh well.

The point is that the idea's good, and that earns my vote. This thingy is actually useful.

I added the delcube, because at the end of the routine, it leaves one cube, created by the last editface; thought the result would just look a bit cleaner without that block.

Nice improvement by only using one editface; i'll add this to my update.

What do you need the l for then? Can't you just loop i (strlen $arg1) directly?

Now the question is what makes more sense; shortness in code, or a more complex, but better routine.

It was my own question at first too, i used to think that shorter is better, even if it was actually inefficient.
The truth is that the simplest code is the most efficient, but no one likes walls.

The procedure is as follows:

1) Does it work from start to finish?
2) Are there any steps i can cut down?
3) Can i improve anything to make it faster?
4) Which parts will i attempt to make smaller?

And you may want to constantly look for ways to make it less prone to problems along the way, or informative if you so wish in case whatever you may be making may only be operated through the command prompt.
You'll want your scripts to be robust, as small as possible and as fast as possible. Complex code will also require comments because even if you don't plan to show it to anyone, if you ever come back at it after a while you WILL be lost in your own work.

The abuse of variables when not really necessary is also something you'd like to avoid. The less things you must store the better. In this case, you can see i've declared l as a local variable, and the if that makes use of it is inside the loop. Now tell me why i did that.

Oui, this should work. The .zip includes the directory »packages/brush/type«; there are the single characters saved as .obr files. You can create an other font by simply overwriting the old brushes with new chars. Like »/savebrush /brush/type/a.obr« etc. Also you can add new single characters if needed; the script simply returns an error if it can't find an unsupported charakter; if you add it, it will find and paste it. But it's a very good idea to update this thingy, so it supports multiple folders for multiple font sets. A simple variable for the directory should work here. Thank you for suggesting!

Just tried to split it, but it seems to be difficult with this font b/c your tiny font uses 2 cubes width and my script just pulls one cube to generate the next char.

I just tried my tiny font & found that it works perfectly fine.

The dependance on direction is a bit annoying... but aside from making a menu, nothing can really be done about that. :/

A couple ideas:
-How about taking in a 2nd, optional, argument for vcolor-ing as well?
-Also, a format for inserting special characters would be nice too. Some font-sets(like my tiny font) include various symbols like arrows & such.

Seems this woun't work. :/ It worked while testing when I saved the characters as numbers, e.g: 1.obr /typegen "1", but it seems that sauerbraten can't read russian chars via CubeScript; you can type and chat with them, but if I request them via script as filename, sauerbraten can't find it. Well, fuck. Anyway: Good work; nice to have a russian font though. I'm sorry.

This woun't work, b/c my script parses the characters directly. If you type as example /typegen "ssh" it will produce: СЧ instead of Щ. I've no idea for a (easy and stable) workaround.

I suppose you could make an array of characters, then grab the index number'd file

so:

lookup "a" -> index 0 -> file 0
lookup "b" -> index 1 -> file 1
...

might work better for russian and etc

I've also created a font yesterday... A bit RE themed, and I fitted the script to RE as well as my custom font as well. Replacing "prefab" with "brush" (and maybe changing the directory layout) should make it Sauer-compatible again though.

Not sure if my script modification was efficient, but it works for me. (I added a second parameter to specify the font, 0 or 1, and changed the number of spaces to 3)

you can copy as brush not only a small part of maps, but a full map too. Iam runned some my DeFrag maps in Sauer with help of this thing.

Doesn't make it any worse than v-commands (vcolor, vscale, vscroll, etc...)
